Add Telecommuting to Your Request for Part-time

Consider upgrading your part time schedule request by adding telecommuting, aka telework, working remotely, or mobile office.

For example, work four days a week: three days at the office and one from home. Or work six hours on Tuesday and Thursday, both from home.

Ask for Both or One at a Time?

You know your job and manager, so use your judgment (and intuition) about asking for both flexible arrangements at once or sequentially.

If you want part time hours plus telecommuting from home part of your workweek, you might request the combination at the same time. It's not unreasonable and I've seen it work many times. You'll be visible and accessible at a level that your manager can probably adapt to.

But if you're going to request seasonal part time and you want to work long distance from another state (e.g., from your condo in Florida during January and February), I suggest you to take a slower, transitional strategy.

First request a telecommuting trial some months ahead of your request for seasonal part time. Maintain full time hours for now, but work two or three days from home.

Get your manager used to your working out of the office yet still communicating effectively as you maintain or boost your productivity. (It's well documented that working away from a main office ups productivity by double-digit percentage points, partly due to fewer interruptions.)

Meanwhile, if at all possible, do set up your remote work station at your condo or wherever you plan to go. Do a 30-day free trial of GoToMyPC to test the arrangement.

Then after proving your ability to work well remotely (from your home), you can make your pitch for a seasonal part-time hours, adding that you want to work all of them remotely.

Millions of today's knowledge workers are working from virtually anywhere. You can be one of them.

Details about Telecommuting Flex Success OR

I have known for a long time that I wanted to do this, but didn't know how to approach it. The guidance your [telecommuting] template provided was just the boost I needed to send me in the right direction. My boss was very impressed and approved it almost immediately even though telecommuting has not been done in this office before. I am so excited...thanks so much!
