Job Sharing: Which
Schedule is Right for You?
A job sharing team's schedule can be designed in a variety of ways. Here are
some possibilities for you to consider.
For many positions, a shortened workweek for each partner is the most
practical arrangement, with a common one being:
Partner A: Works Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday morning
Partner B: Works Wednesday afternoon, Thursday and Friday
Some teams overlap Wednesdays, both working a full day. This means each is
working 60%, together totally 1.2 FTE (full-time equivalent).
Other possibilities include:
Partner A: Monday, Wednesday, alternating Fridays
Partner B: Tuesday, Thursday, alternating Fridays
I've had customers in sales who have used the above arrangement.
The next arrangement has worked for pairs of school teachers:
Partner A: Works mornings, five days a week
Partner B: Works afternoons, five days a week
Partner A and B alternate weeks, or even months
The job split is not always 50/50. For example:
Partner A: Works three days a week
Partner B: Works two days a week
Consider the needs and objectives of the job position and of the two job
partners in coming to a scheduling decision.
